There is a storm looming over the horizon. There are many types of disasters that can strike any of us. What types of disasters could someone need to prepare for? And what do you need to stock up on, whether or not it is survival food items or something else?

First, let’s look at the most likely near term disasters most of us could face.

* High inflation rates as the American dollar is devalued to pay off its debt that reached 100% of GDP in December, 2011. Hyperinflation reminiscent of Zimbabwe doesn’t have to happen to develop sociable chaos. Even 20-30% inflation is adequate to dr up prices while managers keep wages low due to high unemployment and federal benefits are kept flat from manipulations of the Consumer Price Index. Abandonment of the US dollar as a world currency or currency reserve or worldwide investors no longer seeing the American dollar as a safe investment from chaos overseas could devalue our currency as other nations experienced in the Asian crisis a decade ago. If our currency falls by half overnight, the cost of everything that is imported (and it is a lot) doubles. given our large reliance on essentials like imported oil, even locally developed goods rise as the cost to transport them increases. Spiking prices and transportation disruptions will wreak havoc on our just in time shipping network for everything from toys to food at the local supermarket.

* Government cutbacks to pay for incurred debts will happen, even if inflation remains stable. When there is a massive wintertime storm, more class 4 hurricanes or a large earthquake, you can no longer count on the government to send out the Nationwide safeguard to save every person. Witness the Texas wildfires in the summertime of 2011 and floods in Tennessee, where the Nationwide government did nothing despite governors’ phone calls for an emergency declaration. Local residents had to pull collectively and weather the crisis. This will get worse as the military is cut and FEMA grows more inept as poor management of resources is made worse by lack of resources. individuals who spent weeks without power in wintertime storms in 2011 will see the same or worse if another “storm of the century” hits.

* Long term unemployment and underemployment of all grown ups in the household is a personal crisis. With the 99 weeks of unemployment no longer an option for most of the newly unemployed and unemployment payments diminished, your family will be increasingly reliant upon its own savings to whether or not a long interval of low or no earnings. Canned goods and survival foods may make the difference between consuming or not till you’re able to qualify for SNAP / food stamps.

* 9-11-2001 shut down air traffic for several days due to one terrorist attack. Yet terrorists abroad have expanded their strikes in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and Nigeria to incorporate simultaneous assaults on trains or using car bombs to make their demands heard. A similar multiple strike in the United Says has the potential to shut down the total transportation grid and slow transit of goods and folks for months afterward. If it is not currently in your closet or larder now, it may be impossible to get later.

A new word buzzing around the world is catching up with the realtors also. It is the new ‘green revolution’ or the ways to go green so that we utilize very minimal resources from this earth, and if possible give something back to the mother earth so that the coming generation can enjoy what we have enjoyed equally if not in a better way.
There are three main ways to go green if one really wishes to contribute to the new green revolution. They are using alternate source of energy, energy saving and also water savings. When you want to constructing a house or remodeling your existing house, there are definite ways by which alternative energy can be used for our benefits, which will reduce the power consumption from the regular sources. Solar energy is catching up fast with the builders as a main source of alternate energy. By installing good solar water heater on the roof on the constructing stage itself will reduce your power bills to a great extent. Similarly one or two solar rechargeable lights can be used in the house that is as bright as the conventional lights and lasts longer because of the CFL bulbs used in them.
That brings us to the second ways to go green in our home. The new generation CFL bulb is a real boon in saving energy almost fifty percent than the conventional incandescent bulb. For example a 14 Watt CFL bulb will give enough light emitted from a 75 Watt ordinary bulb. Imagine a house in which five or six such bulbs are replaced and the contribution your home making to your way to go green idea. Similarly opting for lighter shade of the color you choose, at least for two sides of the walls, will reflect more light from the bulbs. This will also allow choosing a bulb of lesser wattage there by saving a lot on energy. Incorporating one or two extra windows in the constructing stage also helps in letting in more natural light. And the age old way of remembering to switch off the lights and fans when not in use will also help in bringing down the power consumption as well as the power bills.
The third area to ways to go green is to save water to the best extent possible. You will be surprised of the available water in this earth four percent of the water is potable. So each liter we save of this precious resource is a helping hand we are giving to the mother earth. A shaving mug used instead of running water to rinse the shaving razor will save as much as 3 liters of water each day. Similarly using a shower in place of a bath tub at least thrice a week will save 300 liters of water! Surprised? Modern water cistern designs use almost half the quantity of water but at the same time gives the same cleanliness to your closets. Each of these steps is simple that can be followed without affecting our daily life but at the same time is a positive contribution for the idea of ways to go green.

Let us see Go Green Tips at home first. We need to practice go green at home first before you go out and practice it. The main reason is that we have all the freedom to do in our own way when we start at home. We can contribute to the environment or destroy it all together starting from home. Let us see few tips now,

First set of go green tips, simple one to start with would be thermostat as it can be programmed to reduce energy consumption for example if you keep at 72 degrees Fahrenheit to cool and 68 degrees to heat, you can save lot of energy in cooling or heating your home. In the night you can reduce further down like two degrees at least and it can save you at least six percent of energy consumption every year.

Second set of go green tips, always go with energy star appliances when you are trying to upgrade your appliances and even with electronic items too. For example LED TV might cost you way less than regular TV. And when you go with appliances of more stars, they can save more energy.

Third set of go green tips, and the same applies to CRT monitors as they are less energy efficient when compared to laptops or flat screen monitors with LED or LCD.We need to cover all the cracks with expanding foam or caulk and you can easily locate such cracks at wires or pipes through the windows or doors. These could seem to be minor one but definitely you can save energy by doing this.

Fourth set of go green tips,Try to use weather-strip for all doors and windows as they allow to preserve heat inside the home. Insulation blanket should be used to wrap the water heater. If possible upgrade the water heater to solar water heater or tank less water heater models. If you do not know what option to go with, just choose best energy star rating water heater. Not only water heater but even water pipes can be wrapped with insulating tubes which should also be pre-foamed to save even more energy.

Fifth set of go green tips, if you vacuum the refrigerator coils, it can also improve the efficiency and thus less energy consumption by refrigerator. Try to utilize freezer to its fullest capacity for efficient power usage all the time. Try to use ovens and stoves instead of microwave ovens as they use more energy than stoves or ovens. We need to use water in shower also effectively as five minutes shower will also clean the body completely and save water, energy.

Sixth set of go green tips, avoid free flow of water as much as possible while saving or brushing or while washing dishes so that you can save water. As much as possible try to use dishwashers rather than doing dish washing yourself as dishwashers are mostly energy and water efficient. When aerators are installed in the faucets, it can save water.Replace traditional toilets with newer models, which would save water for every flush.
